Hello Forum,

I am looking to upgrade from a decent Acer 20" monitor at 1650x1080 to a monitor 23"+ at either 1920x1080 or more preferably 1920x1200 res. My budget is no more than $320 before tax (I'd love to keep it much lower but can be convinced to spend the full amount if noticeable differences are shown).

Here is my current monitor specs:

I have been looking at a few monitors already, but I'd rather you all give me your opinions on what monitors to consider. I want to see a noticeable difference between my current monitor and the next. I also would much rather get a 24" with great quality than say a 28" with low quality. I currently have a HD 4890, but I'll probably be getting a HD 5870 for Christmas.

Thanks for any time you spend looking stuff up and any suggestions you can give me.

A monitor is used with your eyes, so get one your eyes like. Usually there are all the same résolution. The important is the contrast ratio (brightness difference between white and black) beware there is native and dynamic. The higher, the better. A native over 1000 is good and dynamic over 8000 is also good for 22 inches, the bigger the screen, the higher you need ratio. Then there is the respond time (change between white and black), the lower the better. A 2 millisecond is good for games because there is a lot a move. But 5ms is very good. Don't go 8ms. I like myself LG for the price. Also at this size, make sure it tilts. But still, go with one your eyes like. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply! I think I've narrowed my search down to these three monitors listed below. I just can't seem to decide between the three. The problem for me is there aren't any good stores around my house to check out LCD's in person. I went to Best Buy (which is the only place I could think of that has them out on display) and they did not have ANY 1920x1200, only 1920x1080. Any other places I could visit to check monitors out? Also, any help you can give on narrowing down the three I've listed below would be nice :)

I just upgraded my LCD panel to a Dell 19". During my search, I discovered aspects that I believe are important:
1. Viewing angle, 2 Contrast ratio, 3. Colour panels have much faster response time [5-8ms] vs MVA 20ms. However TN panels are 6 bit and hence not true colour. MVA panels are 8 bit and give much better colours.

In my search, MVA panels gave wider viewing field about 170deg [horizontal & vertical] vs TN panels 140deg horizontal [often less on the vertical].

As regards true blacks & contrast ratios, equally the MVA panels were superior.

Although TN panels are sold via a headline figure [I]5ms response time, it may mean that other important areas maybe/are sacrificed.

The Dell panel I bought was not for gaming and the requirement was for quality ie colours, contrast, blacks & viewing angles which the MVA panel achieves superbly.

Good Luck

[EDIT] The 3 panels which you have linked above are all TN.
