Hi everyone,

I am currently planning my first PC build.
My objective is to have something running as cheaply as possible, while at the same time leaving plenty of room for future upgrades as higher end parts become cheaper and more funds become available.

This is what i have so far:
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 240
MOBO: Asus M4A77TD-PRO AMD Mainboard
RAM: Corsair DDR3 2GB PC-10600/1333 Value Select Ram
GPU: Asus EAH4350SLN-DI-512MD2 RADEON 4350
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM 16MB SATA 3Gbs
PSU: Thermaltake Litepower 700W ATX Power Supply Unit
CASE: Antec Three Hundred - Black ATX Gaming Case (No PSU)

That is jsut to get me started. I selected that MOBO as it supports DDR3 and AMD Phenom II cpus. I selected that PSU for future upgrades (i know its overkill for the starter system) Later on when prices come down I will upgrade the CPU (phenom II) and GPU (9800), triple the RAM and add another (or 2) HDD's

What do you think of the starter system? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Get 4GB of DDR3 RAM instead. And you're really skimping on the GPU... better off buying this stuff now.

Yeah i realise that im being very tight here.

Reason being the laptop I had been using is being 'requisitioned' so to speak by its original owner and i need a computer fast.

I wanted a bare minimum to get me started, and would slowly bring everything up to speed.

So i think my real question is: does this system hold decent upgrade potential?

I fink the upgrade potential depends mainly on the mainboard. So if u say Phenom II and supports DDR3. Your PSU also has potential. So i fink u should be okay for future upgrade. If you're gonna game make you get a decent graphics card, i'd reccommend the HD 4850 instead of 9800gt, i believe it's much faster for what you get for the price.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I figured that the motherboard would be the real important piece for future upgrades which is why i went for the one i did.
It is also the reason i chose to go with AMD, because you can get a new top range motherboard that supports ddr3 and is compatible with both Athlon and Phenom.
Thanks for the advice

also on further advice i will be substitute the thermal take PSU for a Antec EarthWatt (or EarthPower or something) 650W
