I plan to travel by car from Regina Canada to the warmer southern USA each winter and need a computer. I need to purchase either a laptop or desktop for this purpose. I don’t like using laptops and prefer a desktop. However, my concerns are: (1) will a boxed desktop survive the rough ride in the truck of my car - retaining the programs/information thereon? (2) will a desktop withstand subzero temperatures in the trunk while traveling (and perhaps in the car overnight at a motel stop)?
I recognize laptops are designed for transport, but I still prefer a desktop. Portability isn’t really an issue since I will have lots of trunk space.

Most computers have temperature requirements. At the very least, you'll void any warranties when something goes wrong.
Biggest issue with storing an entire computer system in your trunk will be your LCD. i can't speak as to the ruggedness of modern LCDs but I know older ones would crack when left out in the cold.
If you're going to be doing a lot of traveling then you probably need to get yourself a laptop. If you don't like working on laptops when you're at the house, then I suggest you consider a docking station. If you get one with dual monitor capability and plenty of USB ports (or a USB hub) then you can connect plenty of devices to it, like a full size mouse and keyboard for starters.
it won't have the power of a desktop at the same price, but modern laptops can do just about anything you need them to...with a little patience on your part.
