I have a major problem with this laptop. It is a HP Pavilion dv5130us was running windows xp media center edition. AMD Turion 64 Mobile processor 2.0GHz, 1600MHz bus, 1024MB system memory, 120GB HHD etc. Some how I got files corrupted in windows when running a Trojan removal program. When trying to boot into windows it will not do so. So I tried the “last known working configuration that started windows” and that failed. It will not boot using safe mode; I can’t even get to a command prompt. The HHD has a recovery partition that I can’t even get to or know how to get to it under this situation. I tried using a windows xp corp cd to se if I could repair the system and that failed. Telling me that there was an error trying to setup and configure windows and to see an administrator. I think I made things worse doing that. Is there any help out there? I don’t wand to wipe the drive and re-install windows, I have too many good programs and files that I will not be able to recover. That will be my last and final option.
Can someone help me with this please? Thanks

I think this was posted in the wrong forum. A mod should feel free to move it to the windows forum. Thanks

Thanks for you reply, but this will not help me. To use this you'll have to be able to boot into windows, right now I can not get that far. All my recovery files are on partition "D" but right now I am standing with a black screen.

Please read Sassie's instructions again. Pay attention to the part I quoted and the word I enlarged.

Yes! Must of my programs were saved, the ones that did not make it was not very improtant to me anyways. The only thing that does not work anymore is my internet explorer, when I click on the icon I only get a whit flash on the screen and goes back to the normal desktop. I don't think it is major I will have to see if I can get that going. But aside from everything else, the
laptop seems ok.
Thanks again

That is fairly typical behavior for IE when there are mismatched dlls...in other words the restore didn't overwrite newer versions of some of the dlls, so updating IE should fix the problem (probably need the full/manual/network install version/download to be able to update the currently broken install).
