A friend gave me his Gateway 400SD4 to diagnose because it was buzzing loudly. The buzz was due to the fan, I believe, but it's worse than that. There was something small rattling around inside the case (probably a screw) which in retrospect I should have removed, but I hate to pop the hood on a laptop.
I was able to reinstall Windows but then I moved it and must have shanken that object loose and into the fan because on the next boot-up I heard a snap and crack, and the fan no longer runs. At least I don't hear it running and don't feel any air flow. So I am assuming that whatever was rattling around in there found its way to the fan and caused the fan to break.
The laptop still boots up and I have it running on my chill pad. But I'm concerned that it will overheat without the fan running. How can I monitor the temperature of the CPU to make sure it doesn't overheat?
