What is SPAM?
You may be young but I would hope you are not a newborn on the Internet.

In the case of the subject spammer, these were billions of unsolicited email messages promoting non-existent products and nonexistent services sent with the intent to make money via fraud. The fact this spammer had been brought to court previously and he continued to spam yet more frauds does not sit well with the Court when sentencing comes around. If he does it again when he eventually gets out and gets caught again he may face 10+ years.

Forfeiture of all his financial assets that were tied to the frauds and some jail time, removal of all his computers, yeah that is something to look up to?
He is a criminal IMHO, not someone to emulate.

I used to wonder about why we saw so much spam as well until I started working at an ISP datacenter that had email servers. Spam works off percentages, if you send out 2 million spam messages a percentage of people will click on links, depending on the spam, a smaller percentage of people will continue past the initial link to manually type in information on the linked page. This page could ask for all different types of information, fake bank pages, prompts for social security numbers, requests for email contact (nigerian type scams), as well as all different types of pages selling various things. The reason why you get spam email.... is simply because they work.

A percentage of people who get these emails, that most of us ignore or delete as a matter of course, reply as the email requests. Some people are lonely, some are just ignorant, and some believe the email is giving them something they want... but the fact remains that these emails work. The more people who get online the more effective spam is because it works off the margins.

I wish they had a way of finding and convicting those who put the virus and other mal-ware on our computers.

Sending unsolicited emails under the new law in UK, spammers could be fined £5,000 in a magistrates court or an unlimited penalty from a jury.
