xp product key issue

My friend's pc became corrupted to the point that windows wouldn't boot. I installed a retail xp disk that i had previously installed on my pc, but in order to install it on his pc I must use the product key code on the disk's package, but I'm already registered with that code. Can I change his key code to the one on the sticker on the side of his pc? He's already paid the fee for the licensing key when he bought the pc.

No they will not work. You must have the same version of XP as the product you install. You need to find and OEM version of Windows and the same service pack as was originally installed on the PC. He should contact the computer manufacturer.
