I have this guy,I won't say his name or phone # yet that has pinged me 4 times in the last couple days. My question is, I have ADSL which isn't a static ip, how do I know if I'm targeted or random? I'm thinking someone else from Napster or something had this IP address before. As I haven't shut off my PC in a couple days, I still have the same IP. I know the obvious answer is to release my IP address, but was wondering for future reference I guess. Is there a way to tell if it's random or not? And should I call his ISP and give his name address and phone #?

Hello,

First of all I think you have answered the question yourself, someone else may have been using Napster and that is why you are being pinged. The best thing to do is keep a record of the pings. If you are using Zone Alarm a neat utility to use is ZoneLog which can be d/l at http://www.zonelog.co.uk The best option is to then release and then renew you IP address and watch out for his IP address and then take appropriate action as neccessary.

Thanks for the quick reply! I do have ZA and I have another utility that traces the peoples names, addresses phone #'s on most pings. It's called Neotrace. I got it at http://www.neoworx.com It's just the free express one, but it seems to work ok. I'll just keep a logbook and see what happens after I release my IP. Thanks for the link!

If your worried that your being scanned. You could download a program called tcpdump (windump(?) is the windows version, tcpdump is for unix flavors)This program will capture the IP traffic to your workstation to a file. Which you can then look at to see if your ports are being scanned for running services. ( a little knowledge of TCP/IP will be needed to read the file. If you don't know how to read it then just copy down about 5 lines from the IP address of the offender and I'll "decode" it for you) But if your only getting pings every once in a while then this person/computer is just checking to see if a computer with your IP address is up and running. Nothing to worry about since your IP address isn't a static one.

Ok Thanks Ghost_Hacker! If I think I have a problem I will come to you. I wasn't really worried so much about this one, but,it made me think of the question "How would I know in the future?" I appreciate your help. I think from now on I'll just release my IP every night and that will fix it.
