A friend of mine has an older Compaq Presario 730us. It has an ethernet port (wired) built in, but no wireless built in, so they bought a netgear rangemax wn511b. It installs properly, but when you right-click to view all available networks, it doesn't find anything. Machine has been restarted, connection enabled/disabled/ re-enabled, but still not working even after hitting refresh network list. I know that network IS ok, because I can see it and connect with my laptop.

It's an older laptop, but the guy just wants to dink around on the web. Any suggestions as to why the stupid thing can't seem to find any networks?

BTW, it's running Win XP sp3. Thanks

Thanks for any help or ideas you can provide.

Is the router setup for either B or mixed signals? If it is set for G only the adapter won't see it. Also B does not support any encryption higher then WEP, so you will need to make sure the router is set to WEP or no encryption at all (not recommended).

Actually let me correct that. I believe there are some B adapters that support WPA, but many or most do not.
