Okay Ghost hacker...here's another one for ya...or anyone else out there. Tring to load the same game on my other computer, (why you ask, just to see if I could,) the mouse problem I have figured out, but now I can't get dos to acknowledge the cd-rom. I installed the driver, I know it is the right one as it did work on an older system with the same cd-rom. However. it still does not see the drive. The autoexec.bat or the config. does not have the commands that they need...mscdex, although the file is there. It supposedly automatically does that, which it did not. Somehow, I did get it to load all that...but i didn't work right, because when I rebooted it would not load windows period. SO when I started her up by step-by-step confirmation, I could get it to go, but not loading autoexec. I don't know if this making any sense...but well, I digress. Anyway, I got rid of the commands, but now I am having allsorts of problems with error messages from explorer and mmtask(?) ANy clues?

I don't have anything in autoexec. bat. It is empty as is config. sys. I tried the setup exe. which installed stuff...mscdoo...stuff...but when i rebooted window would not load. I had to start through step-by-step confirmation and not load the autoexec. bat in order to get window to run. On the live chat...Paleo (Thanks Paleo) informed me that I have to load the driver through tru dos...so I will give it a try. TOmorrow. I have a headache. Dos! If it still doesn't work I will let you know what the autoexec.bat says.

mjc: to clear things up a bit, we went over this one on IRC last night, neveryona was trying to copy the driver from one hard drive to another, without being aware of the autoexec.bat or config.sys command lines necessary, or how to write them. I explained how to download the drivers and install, rather than by doing it by hand, which can be done, but is definitely the long way home.

Wait and see, if things work out, it may be taken care of, once the proper drivers are downloaded, unzipped and installed the installation should automate the autoexec.bat and/or config.sys entries, and the CD ROM problem will be cured.

Well, I tried and tried and tried, and nothing worked.I downoaded the new driver, tried to install it in dos, although it is a win setup exe. so it just kept bringing me back to windows. It absolutely refuses to load anything in auotexec. or config.. I think maybe i will just give up now. It really is not THAT important. Not only that, I think I royally messed up the computer because now I am getting error messages like crazy. It didn't like something I did. WHat is mmtask? Anyway I do appreciate all the help.

Try this. Format a floppy disk.
Then run the command
"sys a:" without the Quotes (")
then copy the following file to the floppy.
Himem.sys
mscdex.exe
oakcdrom.sys (Or what ever your cd-rom driver is named )

Then create the Autoexec.bat and config.sys files with the follow

Your Config.sys file should look like this.
Note NO Drive letter or path in the command line.
This is because all the files are in the root directory
of a floppy disk.

device=himem.sys /testmem :off
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
lastdrive=z

Your Autoexec.bat file should read as follows.
Note NO drive letters or path is included.
This is because the files are all in the root dir. of a floppy.

Prompt=$p$g
MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001

Then Use the floppy to start the system.
Just leave it in the A: drive and tell the system to restart
If your Bios is set to look at the floppy first.
it should start in dos with cd-rom support.
adding the drive letter for the cd.
