I got a new hard drive for my ASUS P5A motherboard. I tried using the alternate jumper settings but I always have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to reboot. When I try to install Windows 98 2nd edition I get errors that I have bad or missing files, etc. Or sometimes it reboots.

I think it is a BIOS problem and can not recognize the 45G harddrive. I upgraded the bios to Revision 1007 from ASUS using the AFLASH utility but it still won't recognize the hard drive correctly.

Might be a drive size limitation. I was looking at a site last night that made a reference to problems with drives over 40GB. You might have to return the drive for something a bit smaller than 40GB.

Hard Drive Installation (http://www.tech-review.com/review.pl?id=75&page=1) This article gives BIOS dates to look for, and a reference to drive size problems.

BIOS Hard disk IDE Limitations (http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/bioslim.htm) Mostly deals with older drives up to 8GB, but has a good description of how it happens.

The bad or missing files error messages could be related, not sure. Need to see the exact error message.
