View Full Version : Windows 2000 Setup with an SCSI Drive... ugh!

Hiya,

I just formatted and am trying to install Windows 2000 Professional on my SCSI drive, but when I attempt to do so, I am constantly prompted to install "startup" (boot) files on my IDE drive... which, obviously, I don't want. I would like Windows 2000 to install ONLY on the SCSI drive.

Here's my setup:

-Seagate ST336704LWV Ultra160 SCSI-3 HDD (SCSI Channel 0)

-WDC Expert Series HDD (Primary Master)
-DVD Drive (Primary Slave)

-CD-RW Drive (Secondary Master)
-ZIP-100 Drive (Secondary Slave)

...So, how can I achieve getting the OS to install only onto my SCSI drive?? I'm guessing it mostly has to do with BIOS settings, and if so, which should I specifically have set - and to what?

I did it once before, but for some reason either my memory of the settings fails me, or it just isn't cooperating with me... but anyhow, I know it can be done! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Please let me know at your earliest convenience, so that I can get this done (I need my PC... bad. *sigh*)! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks and take care,

Trying to mix SCSI and IDE drives is always a pain. About the only way I know of to do it is to make the IDE the bootable drive. BIOS looks for an IDE drive as the boot drive, no matter what, so if you mix the two, you have to boot to the IDE drive. If it can be done at all, it will take some serious configuration...

You may want to look into a removeable drive, or remove the IDE drive entirely and go all SCSI. Creating a boot menu might do it, I'm not sure. Try Google (http://www.google.com) and search for multiple boot or boot menu. Maybe you'll find some more info.

Pete's right about getting the SCSI drive to be bootable. But try this disabling the BIOS on the SCSI drive. This will force the installer not to use the "Multi" setting in the boot.ini file. The "multi" setting in a mixed enviroment (IDE and SCSI) will only let Win2k boot from the drives on the Primary IDE channel. That's why it always tries to place the "bootup" files on those drives.

With the BIOS disabled on the SCSI drive. The installer will want to use the "Signature" setting ( a new setting in Win2k that works the same as the "SCSI" setting.) which will cause Win2k to load a SCSI driver to "bootup" from the SCSI drive. This is the only setting that will work in a mixed enviroment of IDE and SCSI.

The only problem is that the SCSI drive won't be "bootable" for any other OS except Win2K.
