My Norton anti-virus detected that the following files were infected with the W95.Hybris.Plugin worm: aabmdmja.abm , aahapcea.aha , aaoboeia.aob , adihjcaa.dih and hapceaaa.apc These were all in the Windows\system folder.
I tried repairing them, but was not able to. Stupidly, I deleted them ! Now I find that I cannot print anything from Notepad or Word Pro etc. Is this due to the missing files ? What do they do ? Can I download them from somewhere ? Unfortunately, I have no backups to restore from. Is my only option to reinstall Windows 98 and if so, does that mean I will lose all data on my hard drive ? Any help would be much appreciated.

Those files were created by the worm. Deleting those strange files should not have an effect on the notepad. The problem is that worm can infect all .zip and .rar files. It also changes the .exe extension to .ex$

Take a look at this:
www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.plugin.html (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.plugin.html)

as for the programs that don't work, you should be able to reload windows which will update any corrupt files.

You should not lose any data.

Hope this helps....

Rather than re-load Windows, try running the System File Checker. Have your 98 CD handy. You can find it by going to Start/Programs/Accessories/SystemTools/SystemInformation/Tools.

Good luck.

You might also be able to reload just the programs that don't work from Control Panel\Add/Remove Programs.

Just don't completely reinstall windows unless it turns out to be a last resort.

celconu: very good info there, nice job...but please don't recommend reinstalling windows unless it's a last resort. Quite often there is a way to resolve the problem without reinstalling, and we try our best to find it before even considering a reinstall. It may preove to be necessary in this case, it's not uncommon with virii, trojans or worms, but even then, only if we can't figure out a way around it.

Thanks, and welcome to the forums.
