I am running Windows 98, Second Edition on two systems. There is a PCI Ethernet Card in both systems, and they are connected via a short cable. The software that came with the Ethernet cards has been installed, but I have not figured out how to do the file and printer sharing yet.
The newer system was just built a week or so ago.
My older system no longer has a Network Neighborhood Icon on the Desktop. Despite the beliefs of some of my friends, these things do not happen by magic, so I must have done something to make it go away. I have no idea what I did nor what to do to get it back. I am sure I will need it and the software it invokes to make the network logic work.
Tomorrow I expect to buy a book on how to set up the file & printer sharing via the Ethernet cards. Maybe it will include an answer to the above problem.
Strange about that Network neighborhood Icon. A year or so ago I remember trying to delete it. Then I tried to move it into an Odds & Ends Folder. When it could not be gotten rid of using normal methods, I decided to leave it alone. Now I got rid of it accidentally.
In case the Network book does not give me a clue, do any of you know how to get the Icon back? I suppose that the software it invokes is still there, but maybe not.

Is the network card listed in the device manager? Try to reinstall the network components to the older system (specifically client for microsoft networks)...
I think to network them together, you have to use a crossover cable...
Also, are you using tweakui? You may have set it to hide the icon...

Hiredgoonz: Control Panel Device Manager (for both systems) shows 6 items under Network Adapter. Same six items for both systems. My best guess is that the Ethernet Cards have been properly installed, and that the software directly associated with them has been installed.
Systems are cabled together with correct type of cable plugged into both Ethernet cards.
Not using Tweakui.
Sea69: Right Click on Network Icon in Control Panel brings up a menu with only two items: Open & Create Shortcut. Properties is not an option. I tried the Create Shortcut option. It put an Shortcut on my Desktop which was not the one for Network neighborhood.
All: I have yet to do Network Administrator and Network setup work. I am afraid that I might do it in the wrong order and/or invoke options I do not really want. Just bought the wrong book and must exchange it tomorrow.
That damn Network Neighborhood Icon must fire up some program, but which one? On new system, Right Click on Network Neighborhood brings up a menu with functions I know I will need to configure for the network software.

Strange: I posted here. Looked for post, and did not find it. Went to another site, came back, & still did not see my post. So I posted again. Now I see my post twice.
Did I do somthing wrong? Is there a glitch in the site software? Could my AOL browser be showing me some previous page from a temp file instead of the most current page from this site?

Thanx for the help. Hiredgoonz: Your mention of Tweakui did the trick. I installed it, and used it to restore the Network neighborhood Icon to my Desktop.
BTW: Tweakui was not on my Windows 98, Second Edition CD, but was on my original Windows 98 CD. Microsoft apparently does not like this Utility, and is trying to phase it out.
