I've got a PC that's been sitting at home and hasn't been turned on in over a year. I decided to bring it to work where I have DSL, blow out the cobwebs and update everything. When I powered it up, I got 2 notices saying "Validation Failed in C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCAL~1\TEMP\VSINIT.DLL" and "Validation Failed in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VSDATA.DLL" and I noticed there was no Zonealarm icon in the taskbar. As far as I know, Zonealarm was working fine the last time the machine was used. According to Windows, Zonealarm is running. I've tried uninstalling it from Programs/Zone Labs/ Uninstall, with Add/Remove Programs, and in Safe Mode. It always gives me the same 2 notices and won't let me go any further. I've also tried shutting Zonealarm down with ms.config and ctrl/alt/delete. Nothing works. I'm not sure if this is related, but I can access the internet with this machine for about 6 minutes and then all traffic stops. I have to restart the machine to access the internet again. Anybody know how to straighten this mess out?

Thanks Yoda. I followed the instructions in your link and found even more Zonealarm files in other places, and the best I can tell, I've removed all vestiges of Zonealarm. Windows Security Center still says Zonealarm is running. What the...? I tried loading a newer version of ZA and the installer seems to work. That's farther along than I've been able to get before. I cancelled out of it before it installed though. Should I go ahead and try to install it?

Well, I finally got it fixed. For anyone else with the same problem, (or me if I forget), here's a link:http://server.iad.liveperson.net/hc/s-28464961/cmd/kbresource/kb-5958279890023213373/view_question!PAGETYPE?sf=101133&documentid=344896&action=view
There are a couple registry entries that have to go that weren't on the link that Yoda provided. Odd thing is, even after all the deleting, Windows Security Center still showed that ZoneAlarm was still running. I went ahead and installed a newer version and it worked fine. It also solved my internet connectivity problem. I downloaded the newest version of Avast and all's well.
Bloodied but unbowed.

Your problem is in using Z/A. Basically, it sucks. Every day it's more and more like Norton. Hogs the system, can't be uninstalled without a PhD in computer science and the research skills of the Library of Congress....
