View Full Version : Netscape 4.77 & annoying "messenger service"

I recently upgraded my *old* copy of Netscape (3.01, I think) to the husky 4.77 downloaded from their site. I intentionally deleted the "AOL Messenger" files and THOUGHT I had made sure during set up that I had not activated or "opted for" any intrusive "features". About 24 hours after loading the software I went to get my e-mail (not the first time I had done this since loading 4.77) one of the 3 "messages" was one of those "personal pages" with a bunch of damned movie ads & other crap I in no way asked to receive! I was particularly puzzled, since I had NOT given Netscape my e-mail address. After my initial shock (and fear that Netscape had actally grabbed my address from the local setup info), I noticed as the thing continued to load (pays to have a slow PC ;-) that it was coming from "messenger.netscape.com" and is actually a web page EVEN THOUGH it loaded WITH MY E-MAIL as a 3rd message and appeared IN the 4.77 e-mail browser. It is clearly labeled "Netscape". I once again went over all the preferences & also (reluctantly) went to the Netscape section apparently devoted to this parasitic intrusion, but have not been able to determine how to "opt out" (like I ***ASKED*** to "OPT IN" in the first place!) This is just the kind of Internet crap-peddling-centered garbage which makes me want to e-mail someone a virtual bag of flaming horse ****! Has anyone seen this & know how I can get rid of it for the future???? I figure my chances of getting an answer here are better than if I e-mail Netscape. AAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!

BTW, what is the general consensus on available browsers? Would I be better off with (s-h-u-d-d-e-r) I.E., or maybe a third option????

Thanks!

Dan

hi

I have IE 5.01 (works fine), and Netscrape 4.72. This is the last one from them that I will install (for the reasons you mention above)

had you heard of AdAware?? this is a very nice app, FREE and you can get it here (http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/index.html)

IMHO there is only one browser: http://www.opera.com

A new v5.1 release is lurking around the corner.
