Wow, almost four years since my last post! Where does the time go...:)
I'm upgrading my DVD burner in a Gateway GT5654, Windows Vista. The machine came with a SATA HD and an Optiarc IDE DVD burner that has given me trouble from the start. I just bought a SATA HP 1260i DVD burner. It came with the SATA data cable and my motherboard has four empty SATA ports. However, when I opened it up to install I learned (my first SATA experience) that the power supply cables are different. There is a spare SATA power connector off the HD supply, but it's down at the bottom and won't reach up to the top where the burner slot is. No other SATA power connectors floating around in there.
I assume I can get either a SATA power cable extender or an IDE to SATA power cable adaptor? Will any adaptor do it? Anything I need to be aware of? Thanks in advance for the help.
