I just got a laptop from work - had wireless internet access at work and other hot spots in town. How do I get internet access at home? Feel like such a dork!

Well, more info on your laptop. What brand/model/operating system? Do you have a wireless router at home?

Do you have internet service at home? If not, you'll have to get that first. They usually provide a modem. Then you just have to add a wireless router.

When you get the modem, ask if it supports wireless or whether or not you need to buy a wireless router... some ISPs provide you with a modem that serves as a wireless router as well.

In our area it depends on whether you have cable or DSL internet. The DSL provider gives new customers a modem/wireless router combo box. I believe they call it a "gateway". So if you choose to purchase DSL internet through your local phone company, you might not need a separate wireless router. The cable company only provides a modem, so you would need a router. Perhaps other cable companies have a similar gateway device that serves as both a modem and wireless router.

Sign up with an appropriate ISP. If no broadband providers available you will need something like a cell-phone USB dongle or dial-up. If you can get broadband then an appropriate wireless router (purchased or a free bundle from the ISP) will be necessary to use your notebook as you do at work or other hot spots.
