Usually I just hit the power button and the PC shuts down normally.

Sometimes it reboots instead. I think it happened when through start/turn off too...

What could cause this?

Now I'm sure.

Start > Shutdown and the PC reboots about 1 every 8 times.

Is there a registry switch that tells the PC to reboot instead of shutting down?

It rebootted the last 3 times in a row when I told it to Off.

Sometimes I get some sort of End Program message with some other error message that appears behind this, and when I select End Now, I get a fatal stop sound and it closes, but may or may not reboot, or shot down.

I think it is related to some sort of Adobe Acrobat update as I had this nag going for a while to install upgrades, and someone else did something when I was not around. Might have started it and canceled or shut off during.

I just don't know where to look...

Oh yeah, the only thing found on the internet was related to Roxio CD burning SW, but I don't have that.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and then click OK. The error message should remain on the screen so that you can record the error information and see what the error is..

Oh yeah, there is an event viewer or some sort of log. Every day when I shut down there is an event code 7000 and other application errors.

The DM1Service service failed to start due to the following error:

IPSec Services: IPSec Services failed to get the complete list of network interfaces on the machine. This can be a potential security hazard to the machine since some of the network interfaces may not get the protection as desired by the applied IPSec filters. Please run IPSec monitor snap-in to further diagnose the problem.

OK, now it's coming around to another post I had a while ago...

Microsoft UAA bus driver for high definition audio is listed twice in the device manager and one has a conflict, and it seems there is just not enough resources, for some reason...

So I unplugged the PCI modem and PCI Wireless G, and same problem. Trying uninstall the driver, it always reinstalls it twice.

I'm not sure, maybe it is because this is an HP with HP BIOS and I installed an ATI AIW HD PCI-E card and the crippled bios does not let you disable the on-board video?

Or maybe it's just a bad ATI driver?

Maybe not ATI. It was installing RealTek HD drivers, twice, and then Microsoft UAA HD drivers, twice again...

hope you don't have to format it "twice"

Maybe not at all. I disabled the extra conflicted Microsoft UAA bus driver for high definition audio in the device manager. Maybe it will be OK. I tried watching HD TV and got sound, but not sure if it was HD multi-channel sound as I just have stereo speakers connected. PC sounds worked fine.

disable the HD in the Bios.........better

I'll have to look into it, but as I recall, the HP crippled BIOS had very few settings.

And I think I want one of the HiDefs. Just not sure why it's installing two?

Maybe one is the on-board RealTek and the other is the ATI HDTV video card?
