Morning all,

Does anyone have a solution for my need to determine the speed of my phone line?

I have a 56K, but am connecting at no more than 28.8. I have ruled out my modem as the problem, as prior to this modem, I had a 36.6, and connected at no more than 28.8. This is a new modem.

So I am left to assume that my phone line is not equiped. I understand that my ISP could have something to do with it, but they are set up for 56K.

Any suggestions on phone line speed determination?

hi

have you checked in DUN??

go to start, programs, accessories, communications, Dial up Networking. Right click, and then left click on Properties.(on the dial up account in question)

on the "General TAB"- click "configure", then, under modem properties, "General TAB" see that "Maximum speed" is set to "57600",

then still in this property window, click the "connection TAB", and then "Advanced"... make sure where at the bottom it says "Extra Settings" that there are no additional lines there.

If it says something like: "ATN0S37=12" this line FORCES your 56k modem to connect at 28.8.......

hope this helps.

edit: as for your phone line, call your local Phone co, and have them run a line test.

There are some phone lines that won't support a 56k connection. If there are several D(igital) to A(nalog) conversions (as can happen if your line is routed to one or more substaions, a long line with repeaters, or several other possibilities you will never hit a connection anywhere near 56k. Here is a link for a line test that will help determine if you line is indee 56k compatible: 808hi.com/56k/3comline.htm (http://808hi.com/56k/3comline.htm). The number to dial is not a toll free number, just to warn you. there are also several other links on that page to help test other causes of not getting a 56k connection.

According to the tech the phone co sent out here a while back, phone lines are generally not guaranteed to support anything faster than 14,400, which is fax speed. I have the exact same problem, I get no higher than 28,800 here, usually 26,400 whether I run a 33,6 or 56K modem. Both connect at 26,400 usually. When I took my computer into town it connected at 33,600 every time with the same 33,6 modem that got 26,400 out here. In my case it's bad phone lines, plus most likely more than one Analog/Digital conversion along the way. I know the phone lines suck, I can hear that on the phone. They won't fix it...keep telling me it's an inside line problem, even when I call from the test jack outside and let them hear the noise and static...
