I have recently purchased a new HP laptop. I wanted to know how can I get the best battery life out of the 6-cell battery, since I have to travel a lot.
well, apparently lithium cells don't have that kind of problem (I don't believe it) but there are a couple of things you could do that should prolong the life of your battery. You can do a continuous state of charging and discharging it, or you could use the battery that often with it removed, and discharge it once a week or so. Make sure you fully charge the battery, and discharge as much as possible as the battery can develop a "memory" of a short life. (if you boot to bios, and plug something in to disable sounds [like a 1/8th inch to 1/8th adapter just to kill sounds] the battery will drain in a bunch of hours) Other then those things, I can't think of anything else that may help,

Lithiums do not have the memory problems of NiCads but they do have issues with deterioration of the electrodes. About 10% per year.

ince you travel a lot, we would recommend you get an additional battery as well, which can be a 9 cell to give you maximum additional battery life. This will give you a lot of peace of mind when you are on the road, and need to be connected. However, if you don't want to spend that much, there is also a lot you can do with the existingbattery to extract the extra juice from it.
Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when on the road and not connected to the Internet. Otherwise the wireless module keeps searching for wireless access points and drains the battery.
Reduce the screen brightness. This will not only reduce strain on your eyes, but also the load on the battery. In most cases, reducing the brightness levels to 50% improves the battery life and also does not affect visibility. You can also use power saving modes if present.
Condition the battery. When you purchase a new battery, drain it completely for the first 3 cycles, before charging it fully. This is called conditioning. The battery will last longer once it has the ability to hold the charge completely.
Don't play CD/DVD. Load the contents on the laptop hard drives (http://www.100millionparts.co.uk/) before accessing them. A constantly spinning optical drive drains battery power. These few basic steps will help you get a few extra minutes out of the battery.
