Thanks in advance for all of your responses!
My problem is that I am trying to add a external modem to my friend's old computer (it's old, it has the aged pentium 133MHz). Windows 98se is not able to detect the sucker in com1 (parallel) or com2 (serial). What do you think the problem is? I know for sure that the com ports are working, and I've tried all of those quick tips like, kicking the box, turning on/off the modem, and fiddling the cables... to no avail. Once again thanks for all of your inputs!

When you run the Add New Hardware Wizard try the "Choose from a list" option instead of having windows try to find the modem. The computer might not be plug and pray compatible. COM1 should be mouse, unless the computer uses a PS/2 mouse, the modem usually should be on COM2. Make sure COM2 is enabled in BIOS.
