View Full Version : Defrag

I need some advice.... I need to run scan disk and then defrag around the office. I haven't had any trouble doing this in the past, now today I have a couple of computers that won't go past 10%. I have disabled all virus protection on each of them, any screensavers they might have, what else? I have even gone into msconfig to temporarily disable some of the startup programs, to no avail. Do I have to reboot each time?
I also tried booting into safe mode on one of them, with no luck. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

hi again
sometimes if you set "Task Scheduler" to run defragg auto- the fact that Task Schd itself is running can cause defragg to restart.
you can get the "End it all" app, I will look for the address. It closes everything running down (safely) except systray, and explorer.
pause your task scheduler, and try it that way. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
also, in the meantime, you can manually close everything (with exception of explorer, and systray) by doing control, alt, delete- and closing them one by one.
also, make sure you dont have any communication software running. (internet activity)
screensaver kicking in can also cause this.. try setting screensaver to "none" ..

Check Power Management settings too. Power Management can turn off the monitor and it won't affect defrag, I have mine set that way and have no problems, but if it tries to turn off the hard drive it will restart. That's not likely to be your problem, but is possible.
Check the Start Up folder and see if Find Fast (or is it Fast Find?) is there. That will do it every time. It checks the drives periodically for recently modified documents to allow you to open them quicker when needed later. IF you need it, create a temporary folder and drag the icon into that folder, reboot and run defrag, then drag the icon back to the Start Up folder when finished.

If you are running Win98, click START | RUN | MSCONFIG -
At the bottom of the first screen, uncheck the _Load STARTUP Group Items_ and reboot the computer. Notice your Systray opens empty. Now run Scandisk and Defrag without annoying restarts.

I've had the same problem twice on two different machines. Got stuck at 10%. i wonder if that's what happens when a disk is highly fragmented. Both times, if I waited long enough it got moving again, and as a result I just figured it was the norm.
