Not in less you need it and are instructed to use it by someone with knowledge of the product.

There are so many cunning approaches to installing and cloaking them that if anything reveals a rootkit (or you suspect you have one on board) my own preference would be to backup data, reformat and reinstall.
BotNets (How to avoid joining a botnet (http://howto.techworld.com/security/3206916/how-to-avoid-joining-a-botnet/)) are one of the greatest growth area for malware these days and they want to stay well hidden and not attract any attention. This is in stark contradistinction to the dreadful fake antiviruses (they are completely full on in your face) that seem to be everywhere just at the moment. A great number of users do believe they have been infected with what the fake is telling them.
