I've had a windows xp computer for over 5 years and I had bought a new pc and thought I would use both by connecting both to a router. At first the connection on my xp computer was working but when I had reinstall the OS to flush the computer clean I haven't been able to regain my connection to the internet why is that I have everything connected like I did before I reinstalled the os. On my new computer all I had to do was plug a cord in and the internet was automatically working.. Can anyone help me?

I'm not too sure what to do any steps I could follow?

You may need to reinstall/update the driver for your network card on the XP machine.

If still no go after checking the drivers perhaps check if any firewalls could be blocking and post the output of ipconfig /all run from a command prompt. I presume you have rebooted the router and the PCs connected to it.

All I have in my LAN or High-speed Internet is 1394 Connection and it says connected but I don't think I'm able to connect through that could I'm not able to access the internet.

You may need to reinstall/update the driver for your network card on the XP machine.

The only CD's I have that can be used to reinstall something is

Operating System disk
Dell Dimension ResourceCD
Sonic RecordNow 7.3 LE Software
Cyberlink PowerDVD 5.3. 1012 Software
Dell Toools System Software
Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 922
Microsoft office basic Edition 2003

Are any of those used to update the driver. I try updating the Network card but it says I'm updated to the latest one

I turned the firewall off after you suggested it but I'm still getting nothing. I don't think I have rebooted the router and the other computer that is connected to the router.

Something is astray if that is all that is there. It sounds as if your NIC has gone AWOL or else is disabled in the BIOS.

Does the router connect to the PC with an Ethernet Cable and into a port like the one below:

If it is and it is on a card (rather than being on-board) then do check to see that it is properly seated.

Results from:
ipconfig /all ??

I agree with Paul, something is certainly wrong since the 1394 connection is firewire and not the Ethernet adapter connection.

Well I have three computers hooked up to a router an the pc that I'm talking about it connected straight to the router and my newer pc is connected from pc to modem to router...

The pc is connected through a ethernet cord staight to the router could it be that when I reformat the computer I did not installed any drivers cause all I did was Reinstall the os and wiped everything ... I have a bunch of blue CD's but wasn't too sure if I need to do anything with them. I checked to see if the cords were connected in properly and it is because I left it the same way before I had reinstall the os...

Yep it does

If you don't see it in Hardware in control panel,it is disable in your BIOS or like he says not seated properly. If you see a ! your driver is wrong, if you think you have the right one. Remove it with right click and windows will reinstall it on reboot. Dell laptop are very allergic to this.

OK So you have an onboard NIC. What shows up when you expand Network Adapters in the Device Manager?

Geness

When I expand it all I find is 1394 Net Adapter in there>.> Is that suppose to be right?

Also under that I have something called other Devices which I don't see on yours and mine has like
Ethernet controller
Multimedia audio controller
PCI Modem
Video controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatiable)
And they all have question marks next to them (Yellow Question marks)

The 1394 adapter should be there alright but so should the NIC for the onboard port. Your only hope is to try adding a PCI/PCIe network card as long as the absence of your NIC in Device Manager is not due to it having been disabled in the BIOS setup or due to some unknown Windows quirk.

I suppose it is worth trying a Live Linux CD such as Puppy to see it it recognises the port and thus take Windows itself out of the equation as a possible cause.

PS Sorry but I hadn't seen the following when I first replied and which indicates that you need to install/upgrade the relevant drivers for all those devices. Grab the drivers then RCLick on the devices one by one and choose install or upgrade. Also under that I have something called other Devices which I don't see on yours and mine has like

Multimedia audio controller
PCI Modem
Video controller

So what should I do? Is their a way to check if its disabled and if so am I able to reenable it through my BIOS? D:

Also how would I upgrade I have no internet so this would have to be through a CD? Right..

I thought I had corrected myself in my last post. It looks quite simply (just as mjc originally indicated) that you need to install or upgrade the drivers for the ethernet controller aka the nic or network interface card.

The drivers should be on a CD that came with the PC or its motherboard. If you have difficulty sourcing them then post the make/model of the PC/motherboard in question.

Okay well on the "CD Dell Dimension ResourceCD" it says "The software is already installed on your computer.Only use CD to reinstall the software"
Which I'm trying to do, also says "You must boot your computer from this CD to run the diagnostics, which may require changing computers boot sequence. See your owners manual for more information"

"Contents:
-Device Drivers
-Diagnostics and uilities
-Computer documentations"

Now when I boot the pc I press f12 to get to the CD cause you can't do it when pc is on desktop which is clearly stated "You must boot your CD"

Now I have the seletions screen of:

*Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive
*Onboard SATA Hard Drive

*System Setup
*Hard rive Diagnostics
* Boot to Utility Partition

User up/down to highlight desired item
Use Enter to select highlghted item

I press Onboard or usb CD-ROM Drive which I thought was the right thing to do I havent touched anything else, too afraid too lmao>.> and when I do it says "Selected boot device not available -
Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

Have I not done it right or is something wrong?

would it be better to just give you the model of my pc? or do you know what i had done wrong:confused:

You don't want to run the Diagnostics included on the CD, so you don't need to boot to it.

Insert the CD, open Windows Explorer (My Computer) and click on the CD. Then look for the Device Drivers folder...then in there you should find the drivers for the missing devices.

You should be able to get what you want from the Dell site if you cant find them on the CD/DVD. Find the model or use its service tag.
