Being totally new to this game of computers, I would like to know in simple lay mans terms can I change my HP scanner 3400c over from parallel connection to USB connection without uninstalling it. At present it is connected to my HP Printer 840c and it scans very slow and I thought if I changed it over to The USB connection (USB connection lead came with Scanner) it might just work a bit faster - or maybe HP Scanners are just slow http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

Well scanners in general are one of the slowest components for a computer, and depending upon the scan resolution it can get slower still.

Usually to switch over it is just a matter of powering everythin down and switching the cables, sometimes it requires that the printer be uninstalled and then upon boot up Windows should redetect it and install the proper drivers. The best source for the exact procedure would be the manual or the manufacturers website.
