I wanted to be sure about how to network (2) PC's in my home.
I have an ISDN connection and I want both computers to share the one connection. Can I just use (2) NIC Cards and a patch cable? Will this do the job, or do I need a Hub or some other connector? I do not plan on having more than (2) PC's, so I did not see the need for any elaborate setup or equipment.

Hello J

Sounds to easy to work,I know. But that is really all there is to it. You need to configure your network connection between the 2 machines and share the ISDN connection.
If you need help with that, please post back a little more infe and someone will be glad to help.

grab a little proggie called AllAboard for you internet connection sharing.... Its real easy to set up (takes about 5 minutes)

as for the network, a crossover cable and 2 10/100 Mbps cards should do the trick

Allaboard
Allaboard]http://www.internetshare.com/index.htm (http://www.internetshare.com/index.htm)

It's fast and only uses 1.28 meg of memory.

BTW ICS from M$ uses over 5 meg of ram and slows down server and client

Thanks. Sounds like we have a lot of networking specialists here.
I think that more and more people are needing or just using home networks.
Pretty soon, you will probably have a computer for almost every function in your household (ex. heat, lights, appliances, etc.).

err sanborn little note......your netwerk crossover cable cant be a normal rj45 cable it has to be wired properly (differently) to work without a HUB.....as for the internet sharing there are many many ways to go about that and Im sure there are lots of different opinions on the subject so Ill add my own 2 cents worth......I have found that it works out much better to set one of the comps up as a server and the second as a client to that server.........hook the server machine to the net and then use a proggie to share the net........unlike most of what Ive read here I recommend a program called winroute.......its not free but ummmm if you look hard enough I bet you can find it somewhere http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif you will find with allot of those net sharing programs that some things will werk and some things wont as in "sometimes" its a problem connecting to internet games etc from the comp thats "not" directly hooked to the internet with winroute you can "map" specific ports through the first comp that will assist you in getting things to work properly.......also err umm people seem a bit confused about the whole 10/100 deal and what that means........there arent any 10/100 NIC's ...... NIC's are either 10mb or they are 100mb get it? hehe if it says 10/100 that means its a 100mb NIC that can run over a 10mb HUB a 10/100 HUB means it supports both 10 and 100mb NIC's so umm the short of all that is.....Get 100mb NIC's 10mb's suck
Good Luck!
