I have written several of my own songs & play guitar, both aucustic and electric, I would like to record them, enhance them, then burn them to cd. I have sound recorder which comes with w98 but it only has 60 seconds play time. I don't want to get into big expense until I've tried it to see how well it works.
Any advice please.

Well since you don't want to go to great expense then the cheapest solution would be to record your songs to tape then transfer the tape to the computer (there are several programs that offer that function - transfer an audio signal from the line input to a digital format), then "burn" them to CD. This site has downloads for just about any kind of musical work Shareware Music Machine (http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/).
The ultimate solution would be a "virtual studio", but most require a very highend sound card, some even proprietary, that would record the music in a digital format, without the "translation" step.
Any way you decide to you will need to acquire a good quality microphone, and possibly a mixer.
There maybe a low cost virtual studio that doesn't exist soley for MIDI use, I'm just not sure......

All Control Agents must memorize Rule 5 before proceding to Rule 6
Goldwave (http://www.goldwave.com/) is a good program. You can download a demo. It cost $40 to register.

one of them is called mutitrack which converts in english to a 4 track studio (I think its 4 tracks) cakewalk is something along the lines of 64 tracks depending on your ram and cpu etc and you can get effects packs to go along with it to enhance your music as well, friend of mine found a demo of that multitrack im pretty sure i have it here somewhere and probably have some others that are either freeware or shareware
