Like most people, I bought a computer that didn't come with a windows 98 disk. Ive heard that you can create one using the CAB files on your computer along with other assorted files. Does any one know what these files are, or how to make an windows instalion disk.
thanx

I'm sure someone knows how to do this, but I'm sure it ain't easy. My suggestion is go to one of many websites and purchase the cd. It will have to be the same version you are running (2nd Edition or whatever), but that will be much easier than copying all that stuff. Then you'll have it whenever you need it. Check www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com)
Make sure you don't buy just the license! You'll need the CD!

Welcome, WKirby! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Do you mean it didn't come with a start-up floppy disk or a Windows CD? If your computer
came with a 'restore' CD you can always use that to re-install all the software that came with your PC.
If you mean you want to make a Windows CD from the .CAB files already on your computer, you would need a
CD-RW drive, some specialized software, a lot of patience, a little luck, and hours of free time. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

tj, is correct.
If you didn't get a winCD when you purchased your computer, then it was either used, (and you are out of luck) or, in for allot of work, or your system has a Recovery/ Restore CD that has not only whichever version of Windoze you have installed, and all of your original system configurations, including all factory installed programs and applications.

I don't think it would work, not all the cab files are copied to the hard drive, or I don't think they are, and the installation does not copy files from the CD that are needed for the installation.
The best way to do it is to copy the win98 directory from the CD to a separate partition, then if you have to format C you still have all the cab files, setup.exe, and other files needed to install. That is the only way I know to install without the CD. And you have to have the CD to do it.

hmmm well kirby just so you know *.cab files are kinda like zip files they contain many different files such as drivers system files program files etc etc etc but as it was stated before that doesnt include the necessary installation files needed to install windoze unfortunately.......bugs me they sell these machines without a windoze disk ya see what happened to ya is the place you bought your comp from took your windoze cd and sold it to someone else at a computer show or similar..........they do it all the time.......pretty crappy way to run a business..........at least that is one posibility..........however if you bought your comp at a reputable establishment ie a major electronics store it should have come with a windoze cd and if it didnt id bitch and go get one from them.........when you buy a computer with windoze installed on it, it has a registration number windoze registration number.....this is what you buy..........and what you own..........if you have a legitimate registration number it may be posible to get a cd from MS simply call them with your reg number tell them the cd is destroyed and get them to send ya a new one........at least its worth a shot hehe i never tried but legally thats the way it is......what you buy is the license not the cd..........Good Luck!
and also btw you "can" legally copy someone elses cd and use it yourself as long as you have your own reg code........that is if thats even a issue for you............
