Is is possible to remove a firmware update that I downloaded for a TDK velocd CD-RW to make it work better in my W2K system. I have since removed the TDK and went back to my old HP 9110i which is only an 8X but it works trouble free or should I say "did". I'm wondering if the firmware update can cause any problems with the old drive's operation. Thanks

yes, it can and looks like has caused your older one to not work correctly.
if it has been less than 5 days (or complete cold boots) not restarts.. winblows saves 5 back up copies of your registry.
you can try this to see if you can change back to a working registry prior to your update.
reboot to command prompt only type at the prompt: scanreg_/restore
with the (_) underscore respresenting a s_pace.
you will be presented with a list of registry dates. Choose one prior- to when you had installed the offending program or change.

Now did the firmware update "flash" the TDK or was it a program that ran at startup?
If it ran at start up you may have remove the referrence to it from the start up routine (no quite familiar with how to do that in Win 2k). If it was a "flash" then it is just on the TDK and not in your system, but you may need to manually remove any drivers/referrences to the TDK from your system in addition to what Sea69 suggested.

err a firmware umm has nothing to do with installing an old drive back in your comp like2be , firmware is basically something similar to your bios in your mother board but its "inside" your hardware device so when you upgrade your firmware it has nothing to do with anything other then the hardware your updating........hopefully that answers your question.........Good Luck!
