I've been trying to put a shortcut to 'My Documents' in the Start menu, but the Start menu appears to be empty, yet it comes up with all my programs etc & I can't understand why.
I have created a folder called 'NON Start' & put a shortcut from this plus one from Startup on my desktop so that I can switch progs from one to the other whenever I want them to start automatically or not.
It seems as if I have swopped all my progs etc from the startmenu to the NON start (as they're all in there) but I can't understand why they come up on the start menu when they're not in the folder.
Any clues please.
PS. am running w98. I did this previously with w95 with no probs.

I'm confused (nothing new); there should already be a "My Documents" shortcut when Windows starts. Do you mean the Start-Up menu, or the Start menu? Why don't you just drag the document to the "My Documents" icon, or 'save as' My Documents?

Thanks.
Didn't explain myself very well. Whilst trying to put a shortcut (to my documents) on the start menu (so that I can access it from the windows (keyboard) start button whilst in other programs, I found that there were no programs in the start up folder, yet they were all accessible from the start button (on screen) & I couldn't understand this. I have now found that the programs (including start up) were in the NON start folder, so presumably windows finds it were ever you put it.
I think that I've sorted that bit out now, but havn't got my shortcut in the start menu, I'm going to try doing a shortcut from C (as it appears that it can't be done from desktop) and see if that works. Will let you know how I go on.

Success:
Created a shortcut (2nd shortcut) to 'My Documents' in its own directory (C) then added this to the task bar. Easy once you have the solution!
This means that when I have the screen ful of 'something or other' and can't easily get back to the desktop I can hit the windows start key (second from bottom left on keyboard) & access 'My Documents' from there.

errr umm Vic? you OK? hahaha................listen ummmm "My Documents" is already in the start menu or at least it should be under start/documents/my documents.........but at any rate errrr ummmm nm hahaha........and as far as the non start folder or whatever crazy stuff you got going on there well ummmmmm Yes windows remembers where you move that folder and ummmmmm its not a good idea to move it for the simple fact that at some point down the road windows may very well posibly forget where you moved it to and then boom you got a mess which it sounds like you already have hahaha ....anyways.....to fix this properly.........open "my computer" go in c:\windows\start menu\programs\start up.........and physically put the shortcut files "that belong" in start up to that folder........and I mean Physically move them exactly the way Im saying to that "exact" folder not some other crazy way you think might werk......then you can check in the start menu under the start button to verify they are in there and then delete the new folder that is wrong "the one you created" you can also fix it in the registry but I dont feel like looking in there to find the proper reg key hehe
anyways.......Good Luck!
and P.S. ---- you scare me....... hahaha

and err umm I kinda didnt think about this when I was typing before but ......... I think windows is not going to let you delete that non startup folder or whatever and youre gonna have to do part of this repair through DOS.........at any rate its a bit of a hassle to get it back right again.......mental note for VIC dont move or get your butt involved in things you have no clue hahahah Have A Nice Day! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The best way to learn is to get in there and screw things up. I bet when this is done he will know more about this situation than anyone on this board. Might be the wrong way to learn it for some, but, I bet he never forgets how to do it again. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

now why didn't someone tell me that before? I obviously don't use the documents link very often. I don't have to go back to them as I don't make mistaeks. (hehe)
It wasn't such a mess as it looked though, and is now back as it should be, I have kept the NONstart folder though with a shortcut to it on the desktop and another to Startup. Which means for instance when I'm using my CD software a lot I can put it in the startup folder (to start up with windows) and put it in the NONstart folder when I'm not using it, this way it's always handy.
Problem was that I had transfered 'Progs' by mistake (slip of the mouse !!!) Anyway I've now deleted the shortcut thatI had put in the start menu And will in future access it from 'Documents'
Your quite right about learning the hard way, a few months ago I salvaged my own PC (with a lot of help from this forum) when all the local puter shops had given it up as scrap, and its now working perfick.
Thanks for all the feedback.
