Many will know the reservations I have had following the introduction of Vista and Win 7. I hadn't fully realised until today that there is no way to log onto or install the old Recovery Console (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-happened-to-the-Recovery-Console) in these newer manifestations of Windows.
Of notable importance (and in the context of a thread posted-to today (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=73945)) is the inability to run the old fixmbr option or the newer bootrec.exe /FixMbr (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-happened-to-the-Recovery-Console) in the absence of a customised recovery option from an OEM PC or when there is no Vista DVD available.
Quite daft and verging on the irresponsible IMHO. There really is no substitute for keeping one's own DIY backup images of any vital partitions.
