Hello OIly,
Welcome to the Forums.
Gee this sounds an awful lot like a homework question. We don't normaly do your homework for you. I happen to feel that the research aspect of it is as valuable a lesson as the question itself. You might try your local library or a search on Google.com. I have seen it turn up some amazing info.
Again, Welcome and hope we can help you with an actual computer problem in the future.

Since the question states "any means", try using Google (http://www.google.com) and search for data compression. There are many programs that can compress data, such as PKZIP and WINZIP. While these programs don't change the physical capacity of the drive, they do reduce file sizes, so that more fits on a disk.

There is a program called FDFORMAT that is able to format a 1.44M floppy to 1.72M, but that probably is not what you are looking for.

There is some good background information in The PC Guide. Click Here (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/fdd/index.htm).

You are welcome, Oilypenny. I just thought you didn't have much to go on to jump into a search without a little help.

It also just occurred to me that Windows supplied DoubleSpace and DriveSpace for disk compression. Read more [url=http://www.elementkjournals.com/w98/0007/w980071.htm]here.
