View Full Version : FAT32 to NTFS or is it the other way?
Having forgotton my laptop password for Win2000 I have decided to format and try again.
I have used a Win98 start up disk to get a prompt but it had told me that the system is NTFS.I haven't done anything yet. So here are a few questions:
1) how do you format a NTFS hard drive with a Win98 startup disk.
2)Do you format in the same way?
3)Is there another method away from this madness?
and 4) Why didn't I leave the password allow?
help!

Hello JPM http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I am guessing that since you are using a Win98 boot disk that you don't have a Win2000 disk. Your first step is Fdisk then partition. If you are not familiar with this procedure then look here (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/setup/hdd-c.html) There are warnings about data loss but I think you are beyond that now. Of course if you DO have a Win2000 CD this can all be done with that as well. Just make sure your machine will boot from CD. It is a step by step procedure, just follow the on screen instructions.
Good luck and let us know how it goes

Cheers Bassman but this is no normal problem...
My laptop does not have a CDROM fitted but is via a PCMCIA port so no access at boot. Im sure that I can repartition and format in FAT32 but would prefer to keep the NTFS as it is more powerful. Caution is needed here as I'd like to keep 2000 but of course need to use the laptop. I'll keep you and the rest of the guide informed.

No 'flavor' of FAT and NTFS can co-exist in the same partition. Total incompatibility.
You may be able to use a program like Partition Manager to create two partitions, then move
the current one and install a dual-boot setup, but without the password, I think you're SOL anyway.
I'd do a Google search on "lost password Windows 2000" and see what comes back.
Good Luck.

Go here for an offline password changer.
NT password editor (http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html)
I would use this only if your commited to reinstalling anyway.
Good Luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

To those interested:
1) Don't forget your Win2000 password.
2) If you do the program quoted before seems to work a bit although doesn't change the Admin password when I tried.
3) If this doesn't work so are going to have to pay or reinstall.
4) On a laptop you can access a CDROM PCMCIA port in during boot: ask and I'll try and explain. There are other problems.
5) See 1.
For all those that answered thanks again. Plans to hack Downing Street will have to wait until I have Word installed.
