So my heighbor calls me about his computer, right? (Here we go again.LMAO) It seems as though some of his cd based programs won't work. He called Gateway support (support?) and they told him to go get cleaner. he spent $12.00 on the cleaner. Cleaned the thing... Nothing. Didn't work. GW then told him to buy a new cdrom. LMAO

So I took one of my audio cds to his house on my way to work. Everything worked fine. Sounds like a driver problem.

Anyway... Is there an easy way to get the generic drivers that came along with WinME? I found a really cool place called Driverguide.com. But I was unable to locate the drivers for WinME and all of the drivers that are posted are from 1999 and older. I looked around at MS's site. But it's so huge. Nothing comes up when I look for 'drivers'.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Shouldn't need any real-mode drivers, unless for older DOS games, after W95 OSR2.

Does his system have a 'real' Me CD or a restore version?

Any conflicts showing on the Device Manager display?

On the Properties page for CD-ROM drive, does it say anything about 'DOS compatibility mode'?

He cleaned the drive, but are the CD's themselves smudged or scratched?

Thanks Tjay...

I haven't had a chance to go over there yet. I'll try to get up early tonight after he's home and check ALL of those things out. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks again, my friend...

WinDrivers (http://www.windrivers.com) might be worth looking at.

If the drive tries to read then gets an error message, try cleaning the drive hubs inside. Take the top cover off and you'll find two round plastic hubs that spin the disk. When they get dirty they can't grab the CD and spin it, the drive sometimes won't read, sometimes will. Clean the hubs with rubbing alcohol and Q-tips. Let it dry, reassemble. I'm still using a 16X drive that would have been retired 2 years ago without a couple of cleanings...needs it again now...

If it's drivers, remove the drive from Device Manager in Safe Mode, so you can get any ghost drivers too.
