It is possible to change the icon for shortcuts because there is a default store of icons accessible to the procedure for 'changing icons'. By what procedure can I add copies of the ones available at http://www.geekpedia.com/icons.php?start=1160 to that default store ?

You can change a shortcut's icon in Windows but the format of the icon files must be proper .ico files. These are essentially true bitmap images.

The page of images linked-to has "icons" in .png format so if you want to use them you should first open them in something like IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) and then save as an icon format.

What version of Windows are you running? You can also remove the shortcut arrow in the lower left corner of icons.
