View Full Version : AT vs ATX Power Connections

I've purchased a new PC box and installed an older AT motherboard which uses the two 6-pin power connectors.
The power supply on the new PC box has only one 6-pin connector (?) along with the 20-pin ATX connector.
Prior to uninstalling the motherboard and returning the box, I thought I would inquire as to whether anyone has run into this before.
Is there a way to connect the power supply gibven this configuration? When I purchased the PC box it indicated that it was compatible with both form factors.
Thanks!

Welcome, Dilly! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The "compatible with both form factors" may have referred to just the mobo mounting hole locations.
Did the PS come installed in the box, or did you buy the items separately?
We need Pete or Randy in on this. I know there are adapters that will let you use one type PS with
a different type mobo, but I'm not sure if they are for just AT PS to ATX mobo, just ATX PS to AT mobo,
or if you can do either with the right one.

thabnks for the reply! I'll wait on a response from Pete or Randy.
Here are two sources of ATX/AT power supply adapters: http://www.basinmultimedia.com/item2514.htm http://www.3dcool.com/powercablesadaptors.shtml
The single 6-pin connector is for ATX boards that have high current requirements.

I have seen MANY motherboards that will support either ATX or AT style power supplies; however, I have NEVER seen a power supply with two types of connectors on it!!.........and that is a solid never!

Here is an ATX power supply (http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/CCAM/enermax451.htm) that has a 6-pin auxiliary connector, but I agree; I don't think there are any ATX supplies with both AT-style connectors.

To answer your question, it can be done, but as far as I know there are no adapters and the connections must be fabricated.

The adapters exist and the links are posted above.
