View Full Version : Things that go bump in the night...

I would consider myself to be reasonable and not superstitious. I now find myself questioning my very sanity...

I was working on a document in Word 2000 where I introduced two screen captured images. I believe I saved both as Tiff images and then proceeded to wrap the text. Everything looks just as I had envisioned. When I click on Print Preview the upper vertical image completely disappears and the text jumps up into its place nicely centering on the page. This is not what I want it to do!!!!!   Sorry about that!

I was up until 3:00 AM the other night, not that I wanted to mind you, looking for some weird, cryptic, yet simple explanation for the frustration I was experiencing. Stupid Word!!!!!   Sorry again about that!

My wife needed this flier for a business opportunity presentation at 7:30 in the morning. Not to worry My Sweet, no need for a late night rendezvous at Kinkos. I will have 50 of these ready and waiting, in color, printed on our HP 4500 Color Laser Printer to keep expenses down.

Thanks to the marvels and improvements of voice recognition, I find myself able to present my request for your assistance despite the tightness and restrictions of the straight-jacket. I do wish, however, that they would turn down the holistic meditation music in my headset. The surf sounds just remind me of how I'd like to pour some salt water down the blow-hole in my computer and let Word gasp for breath!!!!!   Sorry again! I am getting better...really!

Anybody?? Any ideas??

I would be happy to attach the file to an email for anyone who would like to share my pain...sorry, I mean discomfort! I learned that piece of misdirection from a dental school student...who'd never had a filling in his life!

Is the printer you are using the default printer?

No, it is one of three. I didn't try it on the default HP Laser Jet 5...should I?

This is your problem and this is a defect in ALL Windows word processing programs. It sets it up and formats for the default printer and then when you change printers you get fubared.

Change the default printer to the one you are gong to use to print the flier.

Open word

Open the document.

Make any changes

Save the document

Print the document

Wow. Never knew that. Thanks MS. ;)

Wow indeed. This would explain some of the issues I have at work. I work with high speed digital copiers. The work around for this would be to create a PDF then print from that.

BTW thanks for the info Classic.

Thanks for the information classic. That solves a problem i have had with word97 too! (I know it's old, but it works for all my needs!)

It's just something I noticed over time. My big laser printer is my primary printer and I have an ink jet for color jobs. When I would do something with pictures, it would shift when I printed.

It does this, however, when I...File>Print Preview. Is it telling me that based on my default printer it would not be able to show up??

The horizontal image which I placed on the very bottom has filled in black boxes when I left-click to select the image. The vertical image has the filled in black boxes until I text wrap. At this point, when the text moves alongside the image, the boxes that were solid black change to empty boxes.

I haven't attempted to print before I text wrap, but I will give that a go. That is, of course, not where I want the text, but since the "select boxes" outlining the image are solid, I will see if it will print.

I placed the file onto my flash drive and brought it to my father's computer which houses Word 2002 and when I clicked on File>Print Preview the image stayed. It also did print properly when I changed my selection to actually print... My father's printer is exactly the same as mine, a Laser Jet 5... Go figure! ARGH

I'm beginning to think there's a glitch they may have resolved in later versions since David is experiencing the problem in Word 97.

Definitely, things that go bump in the night... A cursory look at some of the documents relating to Word 2000 etc. tell me that there are some very complicated inner workings going on. I'll let you read up on these in more detail through the links, but essentially there is layering going on in what appears to be a static surface. You have the ability to float an object, such as a picture, (manipulate it forward or backward of the actual text layer), or have it behave just as a "giant single letter" (placing it in-line with the rest of the text).

What I was seeing when I described the "select boxes" as either filled-in black or empty was determined by whether I had the picture "in-line" (black filled-in), or when I would Wrap the text the picture was apparently changed to a "floating" image. I'm not sure of all the comings and goings on with that, but I made changes by creating a Macro Frame around the picture and now it shows up both in File>PrintPreview and when I File>Print

Here's was the answer from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=268713

And here: http://word.mvps.org/faqs/DrwGrphcs/DrawLayer.htm This one was most helpful in getting a little bit of a handle on the WooWoo..."metaphysical" nature of the "Things that go bump in the night!" The page I linked to was not necessarily where I found my answer, but if you look at the info in the far left column there are some excellent explanations of graphics in Word documents.

I want to be sensitive to the no advertising policy, but since this was not my original intent to SPAM us...if another of the mods says yeah, I could screen capture the initial steps and what I have now as the images changed. The macro certainly is different...and now works to print as the image is framed per directions.
