When trying to defragment my system, the process goes on and on. Every few minutes, I get an indication that something on the hard drive has changed and the process starts all over again. I think I have all programs/applications shut down. It never used to do this. I'm using Windows 98 on a pc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Disable virus protection, power management and screen saver before defragging.

That should take care of your problem.

If it doesn't, you can always reboot and hold down the F8 key, then choose "safe mode"

It will look strange because it loads only the basic drivers for your pc and nothing else, but this should allow defrag to run, uninterrupted.
