i need to update my bios.
Do you have a specific reason for doing this? Flashing BIOS is not without risk.
At your own risk - an example at ASUS BIOS — UPDATE — FLASH — HOW-TO (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/244603-12-asus-bios-update-flash)

well, i've been wanting to learn how to do it for one, but haven't because of the risk involved.
the main reason i want to do it now is that i bought a dual core processor to replace my single core, but the new cpu was making my pc freeze up. i'm thinkin my old bios won't support the newer cpu. i wanna use my new cpu, but i don't wanna brick my system either.

I found it easier to just use a memory (bootable) stick and it shows up as a HDD and is easily done from there....well.......not easily for the queasly

well, i've been wanting to learn how to do it for one, but haven't because of the risk involved. The manual (http://www.iusermanual.com/motherboard/asus-p5vd2-vm-se-motherboard-manual.htm) tells you how to use the Asus Easy Flash but that is up to you.
If the board supports the new CPU (which specific one is it?) then I would simply reset the BIOS to failsafe defaults and if that fails would consider hardware problems rather than an outmoded BIOS.
