Hi, I have XP and use a site building program called XSitePro. Normally it lets me see a preview of a page I'm building when I click Preview.

But when I did it just now, that box came up with something like:
"we cannot open this type of file if we don't know what produced it"

So I manually put in XSitePro, and it produced a box/file? within XSitePro with an internal URL.

Then I realised the file was called "index.php" - I should have chosen Firefox! - eek!

And to make matters worse I had the box ticked that says "Open all files like this with this application in future".

Luckily most firefox files are opening in FF but I can't preview any XSitePro pages.

How can I undo my mistake please?

Thanks

Can you use the system restore feature and restore your computer to a date the way it was previously?

R-click the file, properties, in the "opens with" section click the "change" button and click Firefox, or if it is not on the list browse to it.

Of course!

OK, luckily I scheduled Restore Points for every day not long ago, so I just have to back up today's work.

Wish me luck. I've never done System Restore on my own before (not without an MS technician on the phone!)

OK just seen your post jlreich.

I previously thought that would just do it the once, but I'll try that thanks.

That will change the file association for that file permanently. If you want to change it for all files of that type you need to open windows explorer, click on tools, folder options, file types, and find that file type in the list and change it to whatever you want to open that file type by default.

If you simply r-click the file and choose "opens with" from the r-click menu that is a one time thing, unless you click the "do this always" box. Which clicking that box is actually a little easier than the method I first gave you. :p

Thank you,

I did the short method first, and although the Preview now opens in Firefox, the page is all in HTML or php code.

I think it's because I made it open with the site building software first.

Then I tried the longer method and it made no difference, but thanks for your help. I now know how to change filetypes in future.

So I'll try to System Restore, but sadly my PC keeps disconnecting both my external hard drives, so I'm looking for info on how to backup my files via FTP online, which I'll ask about in another post. Nothing's ever straightforward. This seemingly small hiccup has uncovered a more serious problem. :(
