I have a 3com Cable Modem and 2 NICS installed in my computer. I would like to know if there is anyway to connect my current network to the internet through the Cable Modem without using a router. Is there any kind of software to fix it where I can manually configure my TCP/IP for my Local LAN and can keep the settings for my Modem so it will browse the net without conflicting with anything? Any resources I can check out?

You might be able to set up separate hardware profiles, but I don't
think you can have both active at the same time in the same profile.
At least not without some kind of additional hardware -- switch/hub/router?
See Windows Help, under "profiles, hardware".

Hello Help and welcome,
What OS's are you running on this network? Your modem becomes a part of the network and therefore has an IP address within the range of your network thus making IT your router.
The ability to configure TCP/IP is already on your computer, R-click Network places>properties>tcp/ip>properties.
Take a look at the manual for the modem to determain how it should be configured, also look under Start>help>configuring tcp/ip.
Hope this helps http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hello HELP_ME,
Alot of this depends on your OS, but if youre running Win9x heres some info that should help....
In order to do what you're trying to do, you need to get some type of internet sharing software (to open the needed ports across your netwerk)........if you're running WinME its already supposedly built in....(but hopefully youre not running WinME hahaha)
There are several available programs for this.........
I recommend "WinRoute", however its not free.......
What you need to do to make it werk........
Computer 1 has 2 NIC's.......one of them goes to the cable modem the other one goes to your local netwerk
Computer 2 has 1 NIC hooked to the Local netwerk
Heres how you set up your netwerk properties........
Assuming you have TCP/IP installed on both comps....
1st - on computer 1 go to Start Button/Run and run "winipcfg" - write down all the properties that you find there associated with your "cable modem" NIC ....DNS servers, IP, Host name etc etc etc (Notice the little "clickable square" next to the dns servers, click that to get all the available servers, should be 3 of them). Also you'll have to click "More Info" to see all the necessary properties
2nd on computer 1 in your netwerk neighborhood properties set all those values "Manually" for your "cable Modem" NIC to the information you wrote down when you ran winipcfg. For your LAN NIC, Specify an IP and make it something Like 192.168.1.50 <- no need to set anything else for this NIC
3rd on computer 2 in the netwerk properties specify an IP on that comp as well something like 192.168.1.51 - set the gateway on this computer as the IP of computer 1 (192.168.1.50) - set everything else on this NIC the same as it is set for the "Cable Modem" NIC on computer 1 (dns servers, host name etc etc etc, just like you were setting it up "to be" the computer hooked to the Cable Modem but with a different IP & Gateway)
4th Dont forget you need a program to open the necessary ports across the netwerk (this basically acts as a "software" router and sets up computer 1 to act as the router)...........you can download winroute with a 30 day trial limit on it but after the 30 days it doesnt werk anymore
I prefer winroute over any of the other programs you could use for many many reasons.......
If you get to that point and have any questions or if you have any questions about what I just posted please post back Id be glad to try to help further......
Hopefully this will help you!
Good Luck! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
