I posted on this awhile back, seeking a solution, now that I've found one I thought I post it for anyone who may have the same concern. I use Netscape 4.77. When you open e-mail, the program will *automatically* connect to the netscpae site and load a window of advertising right there in your e-mail viewer before displaying any mail. Since I pretty much deplore ads in any way shape or form, this REALLY ticked me off. Anyway, here's the answer for anyone interested:
With Netscape closed...
Go to your Netscape\Users\{username}\ directory.
Open the file prefs.js with Notepad or any other text editor and add the following line (just copy & paste in its entirity):
user_pref("mailnews.start_page.enabled", false);
Save prefs.js
When you reopen Netscape your e-mail will no longer automatically connect to messenger.netscape.com, thus eliminating the ads.
There's always a solution! Hope someone else finds this useful.
