You will need a editing program I think.....a Hex editor....you might try Google search to find a free one.

Welcome, Joe! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif Other than directly editing the registry, one of the easiest ways to create a problem is to mess around with the Index.dat or User.dat files. If you want to experiment, make sure you have backup copies of each, and of the registry itself. Better yet, work on a copy you make in a scratch or temporary folder if you really want to be safe. Good Luck!

Unless someone pulled a fast one on me, index.dat is not part of the registry. The files that comprise the registry are system.dat and user.dat. Index.dat shows up in several places when I look through folders in Windows Explorer, but I'm not sure what it does. I think since it shows up in quite a number of folders it might be an index listing of all the files and folders on the hard drive, but not positive. I haven't tried to view/edit or delete it...but I know it's not part of the registry...

OK, did a bit of checking and found out what index.dat is. It's a file created by IE5 to store the URL's you visit on the net. Yep, every site you've been to is there. You can delete the file, but windows recreates it when you reboot. It will be the basic small empty one though, without the sensitive sites you may have visited earlier. This Site (http://members.tripod.com/lotstoread/faqs/indexfiles.html) has a pretty good explanation of what this file is and what it does. Earlier versions used two files called mm256.dat and mm2048.dat.
