View Full Version : Changing registry

I've seen the 'how to' on changing the registry to a backup that's in the computer a few times, but I never really memorized it because I thought I would never need to do it. Now I find that I've screwed something up really bad on my computer and reverting to a backed up registry would be the ideal solution.

Could anyone tell me how to go to one of the older registry dates before this happened to my computer?

For those of you who are curious as to what I did...I'll try to explain it to the best of my knowledge. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

I downloaded two Internet services that allow me to download mp3's (Bearshare and iMesh--great programs...but). I also have Zone Alarm and the normal amount of alerts I usually get can be 2-15 in a 24 hour period. Since installing Bearshare and iMesh, I get at LEAST 250 alerts per hour. The only thing I can figure why I am getting bombarded has to be something to do with some spyware or something. I remember one of the two programs had some extra things to install. I know one was called "Save Now" (whatever that is) and it was 'Highly recommended' I install it so I thought, "What the heck".

Now, I am just assuming that those other programs are my problem. Maybe getting 250 alerts per hour is no big deal, but it really bothers me to know how much my computer is being bombarded! I can handle 10 alerts a day...but not over 500.

So anyway, I went into my Add/Remove programs section and found a bunch of programs there that were not there 3 days ago. I found Save Now as well as a bunch of others and proceeded to delete them. I found there was at least one that I couldn't delete...can't remember the name though. And in all my ruckus of deleteing, I ended up deleting my 'systray'. I don't know what 'systray' is or what it does, but from reading the forums, I hear it's a good thing to have running all the time in the background...along with Explorer (which I didn't delete!) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

After deleteing the possible problem solvers...I still get the alerts. I even ran my Ad-aware spyware program and found there were 16 spyware references on my computer. So I deleted those as well...still didn't help.

I figure going back to a time where I didn't have these leechy programs on my computer--which was 3 days ago--is the easiest solution. I am just assuming that if I reset my registry to what it was 3 days ago, that Bearshare and iMesh will be a thing of the past for me?

I'd really appreciate some answers/feedback/solutions!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

BTW...after re-reading my post, it seems like I forgot to mention something simple that others might pick up on! When I get those numerous alerts on Zone alarm, my file sharing programs aren't running. I was just waiting for someone to write, "Ummmm...just turn off your file sharing programs and your firewall won't be annhilated with alerts."

I'm also running Windows '98

Hi Kayden,

The command you're looking for has to be run from DOS. So, boot to the DOS prompt and type the following:

Scanreg_/Restore

Use a space in place of the underscore (_) used above. You should have a list of at least five registry backups. Pick one to restore that of course has a date before your screwup.

Cheers,

You did it BB66!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I restored my registry and deleted those hideous programs and my alerts are no more! Fini!

Tis too bad though. I really liked iMesh. But me thinks bearshare was the culprit. I may get bold enough to redownload it in the future and pay more attention to what they ask me to install.

Thanks BigBlue!

Hi Kay,

As Pete would say, "Coolness has been achieved." http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That's great news, Kayden. Glad you have things squared away now.

Stealin' my lines huh? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nice job.

Kayden: Systray is the system tray or task bar that runs at bottom right, it has your clock, volume controls, and any TSR programs running are also shown there. Explorer is the basic core of Windows, be glad you didn't manage to delete that, I don't think Windows would even load...with or without a systray...

Well, I am still getting the odd alert on Zone alarm...but nothing like I was before I fixed 'er up.

I was really astounded why I was getting barraged with tons of crashes into my firewall. Could it have been some stupid spyware thing I mistakenly installed? There was at least 3 things Bearshare asked me to...RECOMMENDED I install, actually. I should have known better. I usually scoff at what 'the man' tells me to install. LOL http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks fer the info about systray and explorer Pete. I figured explorer was damn important, but I had no clue what systray was...I just knew it was important.
