I heard of Quake 3 frame rate testing for video cards. How do I test my frame rate? What is a good rating and how is it rated? Thanks

There are several dozen different programs that will do the tests, just do a search with the key words from your post (framerate, testing, q3..) on Google (http://www.google.com/).

now the serious gamer would say that the highest possible is the best, that means if you can get 100 f(rames)p(er)s(econd) at a high resolution and color depth then that is just the start, you need more memory, better card, faster processor....and if you can't afford it or have the latest and greatest then OC it...

My framerate tested at 92.6 is that pretty good?
What are Macs usually frame rate cause I have heard they have a 128bit kernel oppose to a 32bit kernel?

For most people, I'd say 92 is pretty good, around 100 is what alot of gamers shoot for. Depending on what you actually want to do with the machine you could 'tweak' it higher...but what video card do you have, processor, FSB speed, memmory...all of those and more can play a part in how fast you can pump out pixels...

Alot of that also depends on what setting you used for the test diurnal,
if that was higher then 800x600 resolution, with allot of graphics effects, and sound options etc (Yes Sound has an effect on Video) turned on thats pretty "Great" fps............

youll find that alot of the sites you go to claim outrageous frames in tests.......but try to find anyone that can prove they got those results would be hard pressed

On my machine in Q3 I can get about 93 or so frames if i turn all the whistles etc off but under normal usage i average about 60 or there abouts........also depends on what version of the q3 test you use, the newer test gives you less frames then the old one used to. With the old test I used to average over 70. I never see a frame drop in any games I play so thats good enough for me heh http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

extra note: the more graphics you turn off, the less it depends on your vid card and goes to the cpu instead...in other words in most cases its a matter of your vid card and not much else (maybe partly ram).....most newer cpus can fly through frames, but it looks like crap hehehe

That was with every thing turned on also with Diablo 2 it locks up alot on me. You think dropping the resolution would solve this problem?
1GHZ Athlon 200FSB
256PC133
Abit Kt-7 Raid
Radeon DDR 32MB
To me I would think I could get a better FPS with this kind of equipment.

Well diurnal,

Like I said your biggest thing holding you back is going to be the video card itself........

90+fps with everything turned on ain't too shabby my friend
I'd be pretty happy with that myself..........

If you want better performance get a better video card (Like a GeForce3 or at least a GeForce2 GTS)
This may or may not give you better frame rate but they are definately better gaming cards........
ATI cards are great for some things (TV and 2D not much beats 'em for example)...but games are definately "not" ATI's specialty........

As far as diablo locking up, theres very little I can offer to help, because this is going to either most likely be a video driver problem, or a problem within Diablo itself, and since I dont own an ATI vid card or play Diablo, I have no idea what the issue most likely is. The screen resolution however is most likely "Not" the problem that much Id be pretty sure of........

But like I said in the beginning of this post 90+ fps ain't too shabby http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif *Be Happy!* heh

If you can get 60fps in Q3 you'll most likely never notice any problems related with frames dropping etc in games..........anything over that is just for showing off http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
