Please, somebody help!!! I've been trying to get on ebay (www.ebay.com) for 4 DAYS now and keep getting the "gateway time out" error that reads exactly:

"504 Gateway Time-Out

Description : Unable to connect to origin web server. The web site you are attempting to access is currently unreachable. This may be due to a network outage, or the web site might be experiencing technical difficulties"

EVERY OTHER web site WORKS!!! Outlook Express works fine, too. So I DON'T think it's my ISP, which by the way is BYU IT services; LAN/ethernet connection that uses an automatic configuration script (not a proxy server). Sometimes I'll get the home page of ebay but can't get much past 3 clicks into categories. One I was able to get on the Annoucement pages and they didn't report any problems. So I don't know what's up. I even tried using the computers ON CAMPUS and ebay won't work either (the computers on campus use the same BYU network/automatic configuration script).

Could somebody PLEASE go and see if they're able to get onto ebay (not just the homepage, try looking at some stuff on auction or do an item search) and tell me if it's working properly. Also, if you know what the problem might be, please let me know.

Ebay is working fine as of 2:36 pm pacific time October 25 2000.

What's BYU IT services.... could it be that they have ebay blocked?

have you tried going into a dos prompt, and typing in "ping www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com) or have you tried doing a tracer route to ebay? do that by going to the ms dos prompt and typing int "tracert www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com)

Post results here please.

Sounds like BYU IT or the college might have it blocked. Wouldn't even try to figure why, but for some reason it has to be on your end, I just looked at about 15 ads in 4 categories.

Redd Dogg,
The MS-Dos Prompt spit out the following:
"Pinging pages.ebay.com [216.32.120.133] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 216.32.120.133:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0 ms "

Paleo Pete, that's exactly what I figured but usually anytime they BYU blocks a site it will say exactly that on the sreen and why. Also, i have had BYU's service since September and NEVER had a problem getting onto ebay until just 4 days ago. I WILL look into why I can't access it because I have sort of a mini-business going on through ebay and would be really pissed if BYU is blocking it. What stinks even more it that since I live in student family housing, I DON'T have a choice of ISPs. BYU IT services or NOTHING!!! NO phone options either. Can't even have a CORDLESS phone since all their phones/lines/networks are DIGITAL (you can have a cordless/regular phone w/ a special adapter but it costs $30 installation and $5 a month). Anyway, I'll be very dissapointed if blocking is the case here. I'm going to contact IT services tommorrow and hopefully they can give me answers, although most of the reps are students themselves and some have NO clue about network problems.

I would ask this from you fellow PC guiders. IF I find out that it is a block issue, who could I go to to petition? I wouldn't have a clue. Please let me know about proper and non-aggressive ways i could go about making my case concerning networking/ customer rights.
Thanks.

Redd Dogg,
Here is what it spit out when I did the tracert www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com)

"Tracing route to pages .ebay.com[216.32.120.133]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1ms 1ms 1ms 128.187.224.3
2 <10ms <10ms <10ms 128.187.97.11
3 1ms 1ms 1ms sflc-locl-cr1.dcs.byu.edu [128.187.0.114]
4 3ms 3ms 3ms s4-0-1.gw03.slkc.eli.net [209.210.45.77]
5 3ms 4ms 2ms srp2-0.cro1.slkc.eli.net [208.186.20.44]
6 34ms 35ms 35ms p10-0.cro1.scrl.eli.net [207.173.114.41]
7 34ms 35ms 36ms srp2-0.cr02.scrl.eli.net [208.186.20.18]
8 40ms 44ms 39ms p10-0.cr01.pla1.eli.net [207.173.114.45]
9 42ms 40ms 40ms core1.pao.above.net [208.184.129.242]
10 40ms 41ms 40ms core1.pao.above.net [208.184.129.242]
11 41ms 40ms 42ms sjc-pao-oc12.sjc.above.net [209.133.31.149]
12 41ms 41ms 43ms core2-core1-oc48.sjc2.above.net [208.184.102.26]
13 * * * Request timed out. "

The other lines up to 30 said the same thing (*** timed out). Some of the above #s might be wrong since I couldn't copy/paste from the dos prompt. So not everything is EXACT.

I have no clue what all this mess means. If you'd like to explain it then I'd be happy to learn something new.

That's a list of the servers the signal goes through to reach ebay. That's how you reach any site on the internet, you're usually going through at least 15 different servers before you see the webpage you want to look at.

6 34ms 35ms 35ms p10-0.cro1.scrl.eli.net [207.173.114.41] is one of the servers. #6.

The numbers in front, 34ms 35ms 35ms, for instance are the times it took to connect. p10-0.cro1.scrl.eli.net is the server you connected to, [207.173.114.41] is the IP address of the server.

That's how a Trace Route is listed. It's just what the name says, a trace of the route your computer takes to reach a specific site.
