I have a compaq presario cq60-212us laptop. I have owned it for 1 year 4 months. I have noticed that it has always been hot until tonight when i installed a program. My cpu is very hot but just how hot is it?

CPU: right now doing absolutely nothing but this 92 degrees Celsius 198 Faren
Min temp 58 degrees Celsius 136 Fahrenheit
Max temp 105 Celsius 220 Fahrenheit

GPU: 91 Celsius right now
60 Celsius min
105 Celsius max

That's way too hot for both GPU and CPU. Surprised it is actually still working, certainly it has throttled down. You need to get some canned air and blow the dust out of the fan and vent areas. Would also be a good idea to get a laptop cooling pad.

Well a laptop cooling pad is not what i want though. I am already going to open it up and have a look inside and check out the thermal paste. I am going to get some artic 5 paste to slap on there. The funny part about this is that it has been much much hotter than when i took these temp readouts.

Getting some arctic silver on there is a good idea. I actually did this to my wifes laptop just recently and it brought temps back down to normal levels.

If the system isn't even throttling down, you would notice the major slowdown, then those temps are likely incorrect readings. At over 90c the CPU is reaching meltdown temps (literally), if you say it has been even hotter then the readings have to be false. ;)

You might want to try some other monitoring software to compare. If they all read the same then the thermistors may be stuck or just defective.

If the system is actually running that hot, I don't know how, and you don't want to get a cooling pad that's fine, if you like your data gooing out the side of the system. :p

And I thought 96 degrees C was bad for mine...

Sir i am not trying to insult your intelligence but this is the hottest laptop i have ever used ever. I downloaded a few games (back b4 i had my server) and i took out the hard drive to transfer the games and i burnt my hand when i touched the hard disk. This laptop could be a heater if it wanted. When i touch the bottom it is very hot to the touch.

I thought the sensors might have been a little mucked up too. But the the cpu and gpu temps vary. There not always the same. Sometimes the gpu will be 20 degrees cooler than the cpu.

About the computer slowing down, sometimes it feels like it is rather slow. An example would be when i got it i could play command and conquer 3 red alert on med settings. I had to reinstall the os and updated all the drivers and that but now it cannot play the game on low at all. I keep it on power-saver for the most part cept when i wanna do something that involves 3d.

I'm going to open it up tonight and see whats down in there and if i could make a better way for it to cool down there.

That's pretty hot.

You have to do something to get the temps under control or the system won't last much longer. Something will fail sooner or later, most likely sooner at those temps.

Well i got the artic silver and took the laptop apart. It kinda looked like the thermal paste melted cause it was all around the edge of the cpu. the gpu has this little sticky thing on it. I didnt mess with that cause im not sure what to do about that. The outlet on the fan had about 3cm of stuff piled up in there. I am surprised it didnt catch fire actually. Well anyway after doing all that it now is around 109 degrees Fahrenheit doing nothing. Thats a lot better than the 225 it was before. Not to bad for a 17 year old kid and a tube of paste lol

That was the deal when I did my wifes laptop. The thermal paste on the CPU part of the heatsink had actually turned rock solid and it took me about 45 minutes to get it off. Actually I wasn't even able to get off the stuff that had slopped over, but I did get it off the part that comes in contact with the CPU so that's all that really matters. I'm just glad that it didn't stick to he CPU itself or Dell would have been making a trip out the replace the CPU and heatsink.

Yeah leave the pad on the NB side of the heatsink as it is. Only touch that if really necessary.

109F/43C is much better. :)

Well its not the north-bridge though. This laptop has a nvidia 8200 in it. They use the same heatsink for the cpu and gpu. I was just wounderin about that little pad there cause it would seem like thermal paste there would be better. Or even a little thermal paste on the chip then the pad or something????

OMG iim using it to type this message and the fan just turned off :) . I have never had that happen the whole time i have had it...normally it just spins rly fast. Its just a little odd though cause i bought this new and it has never ever been this cool.

The thing that concerns me about that is the pad seems much thinker, and thermal paste would not work. I wouldn't try putting compound on there between the pad and chip, I really don't know how that would work out, it might eat the pad. How are the GPU temps? Are they good now?

Awesome. That is what it is supposed to do.

The gpu temp is always a little higher about 7 degrees Celsius more than the cpu.

That sounds about right. GPU usually do run hotter than the CPU. They can take higher temps than a CPU, so it looks like you are in good shape. :)

I just dont get how they survived that long. It's been like that for a long while. I guess the important thing is that it runs now lol.

Those temps are got yeah, But my MacBook Pro is allowed to be at 90C.. Its shutdown temp is 108C but its allowed to stay in 80-90 is just the way its built. If his laptop is compact and small then you never know. That is still damn hot, there are some great laptop coolers out there :D

Try to upgrade your bios that will solve your problem
let me know when you have done that
