HI: I still enjoy this site and have learned alot, but am not a pro yet. I have been through 2 complete upgrades and now have 1 gig cpu, 2 20 gig harddrives, 1 1 gig harddrive just for DOS 6.22. Now another problem, my internet connection, I only get 26,400 and live way out in the country, but I do have running water and indoor outhouse. I have dishnetwork. How do I increase my speed? What is the cost and hardware and software cost. You all have helped me many, many times Please help now. Keep up the good work. Oh, I did get a CD writer also. andyswork@beci.net

Dishnetwork = Satellite? Or something else?

What kind of modem? Internal/external/PCI/ISA/serial/USB?

Andy,
Move to a city.... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I, too live in the country, small town actually, in the middle of nowhere, my father-in-law lives outside of town. I get a good 52k connection, he can't get anything past 26.4k, so it just may be that the phone lines in your area cannot support a higher speed than you are getting. If you want to increase your speed you'll have to spend about $100 per month to do so and get the new service called Starband (http://www.starband.com/) (gets you unlimited internet and Dishnetwork satellite programming) or go with DirectPC, other than that you may have very few options, DSL is very unlikely in your location, if you have satellite TV then cable is also doubtful. There are new wireless services cropping up but, if you are in an area like me then a couple of years from now, they may be available...

This is almost never practical, but if you live close enough to a phone switching station for it to not be ridiculously expensive, you may be able to pay for the phone company to run isdn to your house...I've heard of them doing it...but again, unless you live pretty close, it will be alot of $$

If you go to Internet Options and the Settings for Temporary Internet Files you can adjust the amount of disk space allocated to store those files as well as set the location...I don't know how much this will help you though...your computer already does this, the only thing you would change is where and how many files it would store...

I guess if you increased the size, you could store more files, but pages change so often it's not a huge help...

Something you can try is turning off images for Internet Explorer...go to the Advanced Tab under Internet Options and under Multimedia you can uncheck the "show pictures" box and check the show image placeholders box...this will speed up your browsing since you'll only be loading the html...

The only problem is you don't see any pictures, but you can still right click on where a picture would be and select show picture if it's somethig you need to see...

No guarantees, but a 'hardware' modem might help some.

Some USR/3Com internal models, or an external modem, serial or USB.

or :

Aggregate your bandwidth.
If you have more than one telephone line, and an extra modem, you can potentially double your connection speed when using Windows 98 Dial-Up Networking by adding the second modem to your original connection.

Once the second modem is installed, open the Properties dialog of the desired Windows Dial-Up Networking connection profile, click the tab that says Multilink and add the second modem to the connection. (Your ISP or dial-up server must support Multilink PPP.) You can use both modems to support one connection at an aggregated bandwidth.

Your modems do not have to be from the same vendor or even connect at the same speed.
