I just installed a NIC Card on my computer, now every time I start it.....it ask for a password. Is there any way I can configure this so I'm not prompted for a password every time I restart.
thanks

hello Jennifer,
A little system info would be helpful. What OS? What NIC? What have you done to get past the password prompt so far? Is it a bootup password or OS password?
With this, I am sure we can help http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

The Nic card is a 3Com Etherlilnk 10/100 Bus Master PCI Adapter.
I'm running Windows98 having installed the Service Pak.
It's just a boot-up password that it's asking for, I haven't put a password into it, I've just been clicking "ok or cancel" to get past it.
thanks for your response,

Hello jennifer, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Is that NIC hooked up to your local network?
You can get that login screen to disappear.....but if it doesnt come up on bootup youre not going to be logged into your network so Im a bit confused what youre trying to do.......
Do you "Not" want to login to the network?

Yes the NIC Card is going to hooked up for a local network. I want to use my computers as a network but I was just hoping that I could get around not having to always get prompted for a password. Do I need to enter a password to login in to the network, or can I just click ok?
thanks,

If this is a boot password, you would disable it in your BIOS.Usualy if you enter a name but no password, it goes away.
If it is your Network login then you can't. It is part of the network process. You need to be authinticated to access network resources. You can set your account with no password so you don't have to type it in every time.
I am curious as to why this started happening when you installed the NIC. Did you install anything else?

Jennifer.....
You need to keep that login screen there......if you remove it then your network wont work......if you dont want to use a password you dont need to...........but you need that login screen for the network to work properly.......if by some means you stumble around and find a way to make it go away, youre going to be very sorry when you cant login to your network hehe..............
bass, every time you install a new NIC, if the login screen wasnt there before, most times it will show up after the install.........windows assumes that since youre installing a NIC that youre gonna want to login to a network...... Duh! heh
Sometimes that login screen "doesnt" show up after you install a NIC, and at times its a real pain in the ars to get it working right......removing and reinstalling the card sometimes several times before it works properly......usually only happens on older comps older NIC's blah blah blah
Anyways Jennifer You Need That Login Screen...........
EDIT:I do remember seeing something in tweak that said something about "auto login" this might have something to do with making that login screen go away and still login to the network but I really dunno...........
Maybe someone else here knows if that will do that or not..... but that's about the only thing I can think of.......and like I said I really dont know if that does that or not.....

Learned something cool today about this topic. If you are not using your computer to log onto a network, and want to avoid the nagging logon screen, on the desktop R.click Network Places(or neiborhood)>click properties> between ADD, Remove buttons and File and Print Sharing button, click dropdown menu and select Windows Login. If you get a password promt on next startup, just don't enter a password and it goes away.
When you set up your network, you can go back to Client for Microsoft and have you network login back http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

Is this the only way? Two of the Three computers I hooked up went fine, the third one doesn't ask me for the password. Can I keep deleting the Nic Card in the device manager and rebooting and just hope that it will eventually ask me for a password? or do I have to physically remove the card every time? and is this the only way?
thanks for the response,

Ok I finally got it to ask me for a password......Whew! But for some reason it dosen't see the other two computers. I'm using a Linksys 5-port hub, any ideas on how to make this third computer see the other two ?

Sounds like the configuration settings aren't correct for this machine...goto to Network in Control Panel and see if the settings match those of the other two machines or are what are suggest by the NIC manufacturer
